Let’s make things happen!
I may not be writing in here, but I am doing things. I guess. Been rejected by a couple more agents and a couple more magazines, but it’s all good. *Everyone* can’t reject me, right? Well, I’ll let you know when get through everyone.
I got a new phone when Kenzie and I combined phone plans, and its fun as all hell. I’d like to get more stuff for it so I can use it as an mp3 player, but all things in due time. Right now it’s just fun taking pictures and having ringtones that aren’t little tinny things.
We also got a new cat, Delilah. Or is it Delila? How would I know, this is the first time I’ve typed it. She’s very cute, and her hobbies include hiding under things, running away and being skittish. Hollywood causes most of it, but it seems like she’s getting used to him. He’s still chasing after her like a tuxedo wearing retard, and I think one these days she’s just going to go Tom and Jerry on his ass and wail on him with a frying pan or something.
Work is good, as people are buying comics out the wazoo, specifically the Buffy Season 8 comic and The Dark Tower comic, giving us some record sales with them. It’s neat, but with that and the death of captain america, it’s beginning to feel like 1993 again. I wasn’t on the retailer side of the desk back then, but I remember what it was like as a customer, and yes, I spent lots of money and it was fun…for about two years and then *whammo* the floor goes out from underneath you. For those of you not in the know, 1993 was the year Superman died and they sold a million of them, Image Comics was founded by a group of the hottest artists of the time, multiple variant covers ruled the day and comics were huge, they were everywhere. The sheet amount of product being put out was obscene, and naturally, after a couple of years, that, coupled with bad stories and a booming speculator market (being buying comics as a short term investment) caused a massive industry wide crash. Marvel declared bankruptcy, the market shrunk and all the small comic shops that sprung up in the early 90s folded like houses of cards. Which was ironic, because many of them sold cards. Comics are now “booming” again, with super-big things like the afore mentioned Dark Tower and Buffy selling at around the 200,000-250,000 mark, and the regular big hits selling at about the 100,000 mark. Crap comics that are about to be canceled are at about the 15,000 mark. A boom compared to 10 years ago, but remember, in 93 huge things were selling at about a million (Death of Superman numbers…and believe me, I know they sold a million of them, because not a month goes by when someone calls or comes in and says ‘Hey, I have that comic where Superman dies! I didn’t read it or anything. Is it worth anything?’ No. No it’s not.) and the bottom books were in the 50,000s or so. Like I said, I wasn’t there, but still. I’m happy people are reading and are interested, but I don’t want to be steering my ship into another black hole, y’know? I mean, when this decades Spider-Man Clone saga comes out, how fast will people leave?
We ordered our Harry Potters today at the store. I signed papers that say if I tell you when we get them, or where they are, I’ll have to stab you in the eye and then eat a magic death pill.
I really like older music, but the problem is they aren’t making any more of it. If I hear that Gym Class Heroes song one more time I may have to indulge in some violence. I’ll stick with my Johnny Cash and Grandmaster Flash, thank you. Okay, well, I can’t be all that snobbish while belting out “Too little, too late.”
That’s a spectacle.
Battlestar Galactica’s finale was ass, because I find the “these people are Cylons” cliffhanger hard to swallow, and having to wait until 2008 is just cruel. I thought I was upset at “Heroes” season break, but this…oh, it’s a bitter betrayal. Still watching: 24, Heroes, Veronica Mars (when it’s on), Boston Legal (ditto), American Idol (although just barely), Lost, Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives. Am excited for the return of Entourage and Sopranos. Rome and The Riches are in DVR exile, for no real reason, just that we want to watch them but don’t really have time. Yes, one day we will sit down and watch all 9 episodes of Rome at once, and then maybe, maybe we’ll know what’s going on. Maybe.
Am writing some, but mostly comic book scribblings in my notebook. Most of my computer time is spent researching agents and mags and sending of e-queries.
Oh yeah, and there’s this whole “Five months and counting to the wedding” thing going on.
We’re in for an interesting summer.
EDIT: Oh, and I found out today that Brian K Vaughn, one of my favorite comic authors who has an amazing body of work, is my age. Not going to let it get to me, not going to let it get to me…
